Mother Ann Eliza with children Lulu, Ollie, and Abner C. Nanney

With music in their veins, Lulu and Ollie played the violin, brother Abner played the guitar and with their mother, Ann Eliza, who played the organ, an instrument that folded down for transport, they formed a traveling orchestra. In Lulu's 1896 diary she related that she made $72.00 that year from her playing. The family traveled in a covered buckboard wagon to areas all over the valley (Lyonsville, Manton, Balls Ferry and Red Bluff) to play. Lulu's family was already established in the cattle business, as Abner Nanney had many holdings in the mountains, namely Morgan Springs, (Now the Hanna Ranch), Child's Meadows and Mountain Meadows out of Westwood, all of which were renamed in later years. Abner Nanney's family were descendants of William B. Ide, the first and only President of California.
